The addition of Nokia Lumia 1520 to the premium Lumia smartphones series is no doubt doing great in the market. Before a couple of years, Nokia was having trouble with the decline in sales of their smartphones as their devices were not able to compete with Apple and Android devices. However, things are improving rapidly and firmly with the launch of Lumia series and Nokia Lumia 1520 is giving tough competition to the devices of Samsung, Sony and Apple at the marketplace which is available in the similar price range.

lumia-1520At First Glance

Nokia Lumia 1520 looks similar to Nokia 1020 at first glance as it has almost the same design and build except camera hump. Size of the body is impressive however; the camera lost half of its pixels and some of the sensor area, but hopefully will keep the amazing quality of the image.

lumia-1520Design and Handling

Lumia 1520 has 6” screen which is pretty huge for a pocket able device, but sized reasonably for a phablet and weighs only 209g. It is not the bigger one around as HTC one max is taller, heavier and Galaxy mega 6.3 is bigger tangibly.

Like Galaxy Note 3, HTC One Max and Galaxy Mega 6.3, the Lumia 1520 has the Search, Home and Back buttons. The front facing camera is 1.2 MP that is capable of recording 720p videos. Front camera, screen and capacitive keys are covered with Gorilla Glass 2 which protects phablet from unwanted scratch.

The buttons of Nokia Lumia 1520 are on the right side, contain volume, power key and two stage shutter key which have been moved down so the thumb could reach easily.

Battery of the device is 3400mAH which is reasonably big and has the capacity to run for a longer time. The Finnish company introduces wireless charging feature on the device which was missing in previous models of the series. In order to use this feature, a separate Qi wireless charger would be required and it comes in many shapes and sizes nowadays.

The battery of the device is not only massive but powerful which made the device achieve amazing score over other devices available in the similar price range. With this power efficient device, you can easily manage four days with a single charge if the device is used only one hour for calls, web browsing and video play back daily.

The device has 6” of large IPS LCD screen which is incorporated by Nokia’s ClearBlack technology – a polarizing filter that minimizes glare. It also has the gorilla glass 2 for the protection which covers the front camera and overall screen.

The supersensitive touch technology, Capacitive touch sensor, allows the user to open desired application quickly even you are wearing the winter gloves.

In the settings, color profile gives two sliders to play with – one for managing the temperature of color (warm, cool and neutral range) and color saturation (vivid to natural). The Glance screen keeps the notification and clock visible even after locking the screen. You can also make your desired settings for Glance Screen to appear only for a while after locking the screen. If the default white display is too bright for your sleepy eyes at night then, you can pick other colors – Red, Blue or Green – for Glance screen info.

Lumia 1520 has a 20 MP camera that uses 1/2.5” sensor, gives pure view of the image and amazing video results. In other words, the surface area of the sensor is 15% smaller than sensor of 1/2.3” Xperia Z1 and almost third of the Lumia 1020’s PureView sensor.

In the dark, image and video quality of Lumia 1520 is very amazing. It has optical image stabilization and dual-LED flash which is stronger than single LED flash that means it is competitive in the dark against other devices.

Nokia has done a great job by creating the Lumia dubbed Nokia Pro Camera app – one of the key software feature that uses simple user interface to fine tune the camera settings, making it very easy to use for novices and professionals alike. Lumia 1020 was not very fast in saving picture and lots of user did not like it very much. In the latest model of the series, Lumia 1520, company has significantly improved the area and making the device reasonably faster.

Another cool trick of the device is Camera lens which at once snap two pictures – one in the full resolution and the other one in 5 MP, making it far much easier to share with friends.

1.      The still image quality

The expectation of the user is quite high for any Pure View Camera. With still image quality of the Nokia Lumia Pure view camera, you can now capture even those tiny but important details that lower resolution cameras are not capable of.

2.      Audio and Video quality

The device is capable of recording videos at [email protected] and allows zooming during the video. You can zoom up to 3 times in 1080p mode and if you like to feel cinematically, then 24fps and 25fps are also there to enjoy with. However, these options are available only for 720p resolution.

Lumia 1520 records distortion free sounds with stereo audio at 256kbps and the Audio Bass Filter removes the low frequency noise.

lumia-1520User interface

If you have already used Windows smartphones then you may found user interface of Lumia 1520 very familiar. The software is fast, has minimal lags and application runs smoothly. In the Internet Explorer browser and app list, scrolling is a lot much easier than the android devices. The device runs latest version of Windows Phone 8 and comes with firmware called Lumia Black.

Double tapping on the unlock button reveals current date, time, missed calls, calendar events and emails. On top of the screen music control appears by pushing the volume rocker in any direction.

You can also resize the Live Tiles and choose quarter, normal, double size. Just Tap the item and hold a while, an extra resize button will appear. The lock screen has reasonable flexibility and Live App services allow apps to show images and notification. You have the option to set one app for big detailed notification and five apps to show the status of less detailed notifications. In store, there are several apps that show percentage of battery on the lock screen through these notifications. Controlling the wallpaper of lock screen is also accessible by apps.

Currently, People Hub is the best phone and social book that has the capability to list contacts of all friends and their email address appropriately. All the contacts in the phone book are arranged alphabetically.

It also has the search shortcut on Add Contact button enabling you to search the desired contact quickly.

Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first phablet of the company, an evolutionary leap for the Windows Phone making it a must have due to its excellent software features and Hardware. It has wonderful specs and excellent software features that are hard to find in other devices available in the similar price range.
